Welcome to Mrs. Sharp's Website!

I graduated from James Madison University in 2014 with a Masters of Arts in Teaching.

I am currently in my third year of teaching First Grade at Bessie Weller Elementary School.

Before Bessie, I taught English at Laibin Lijing International Bilingual School in China for a year.

I also directed and instructed at a summer theatre camp for six years.

I love working with children, encouraging them to love learning, and to let curosity be their teacher.

Work Experience

Teaching English in China

  • For eight months in 2014 I moved to China and taught English as a second language to students, ages 2-9.

  • I worked from an ESL curriculum when teaching the primary school students, and I was able to create my own lessons for the preschool and kindergarteners.

  • I choreographed several dances for the students to perform in school programs.

  • During this time I also studied Chinese and am now conversational in Mandarin.

Teaching at Bessie Weller Elementary

  • I am in my third year of teaching first grade at a city school in Staunton, Virginia.

  • My curriculum is shaped around the Virginia SOLs, but I like to ensure I am teaching to the student's life experience and not to the tests.

  • I run my classroom predominently in a learning station rotation format. I often incorporate a teacher-led station, an independent game station, and a technology station.

  • Most of my curriculum is integrated cross-curricularly with an overarching theme for the week.

  • I have experience with many first grade virginia assessments: VA PALs literacy assessment, Diebels WPM assessment, Informal Decoding Inventory, and math benchmarks.

Running a Summer Theatre Camp

  • For three years I was the Hurrah Players Summer Theatre Camp Coordinator.

  • We had three two-week sessions each summer, with about 100 students per session.

  • I would oversee all camp activities which include: dance, vocals, and acting classes, along with putting on a one act show with each age group.

  • In addition to coordinating camp, I directed the youngest age group's one act show.
